CHARACTER SUMMARY

Here's where Penelope gets slightly complicated. Death is the Only Ending for the Villainess is an isekai-style storyline where the protagonist, a 20-year-old university student named Siyeon Cha, gets addicted to playing the new otome game that's all the rage amongst her friends: Daughter of the Duke – Love Project!. After beating the Normal Mode, she discovers there's a secret ending to the game's story; however, it's only accessible by paying money OR by defeating the game on Hard Mode. Being a broke uni student, she sets out to try to defeat the Hard Mode, which has her playing as the Normal Mode's villainess (Penelope) instead of as the Normal Mode's protagonist, Ivonne.

Lo and behold, after falling asleep playing the game without defeating Hard Mode, Siyeon wakes up in the body of Penelope Eckhart, having "transmigrated" from her own world to the world of the otome game. And suddenly the stakes for defeating Hard Mode just got a lot higher — because in this world, the game overs are real.

▷ Due to the premise of the series, the protagonist tends to think of herself and "Penelope" interchangeably, depending on context; when contemplating aspects of the character's history that occurred chronologically before she transmigrated into Penelope's body, she tends to think of Penelope as a separate person (and will even get annoyed with other characters on Penelope's behalf for their treatment of her). However, she also thinks of herself as the character of Penelope, and will project her own feelings and experiences onto the character's identity. I realize this can get a little confusing in gameplay so if you'd like me to avoid this particular narrative conceit, just let me know!

REGARDING PENELOPE'S AGE: "Penelope" is 18 years old, as her canonpoint falls on the date of her coming-of-age ball in the in-universe game narrative. The girl who "transmigrated" into the role of Penelope is a university student aged 20. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please don't hesitate to contact me about it!
